THIRTY DAYS WILD DAY ONE - SEED IN POT

Seed wrapped in loo paper and placed on potting compost. 31st May 2020
Seed wrapped in loo paper and placed on potting compost. 31st May 2020
For two weeks, up to two weeks ago, a constant flow of seeds on parachutes was floating across the view. The supply has dwindled but some still come - and I don't know what they are.

On Friday one sailed in through the window and drifted straight down onto my laptop keyboard. It was almost as if it had a homing instinct. Very small, with a parachute so white at first I couldn't see where it had gone. And once I'd found it, it was difficult to pick up, so small and light it was. And even when I'd got it on my hand I momentarily lost track of it.

Now what should one do with an un-identified seed that lands on one's laptop? Plant it of course! So . . . I carefully wrapped it in a single piece of loo-paper. That way, although I could no longer see it I knew it was safely there and could be put on potting compost; my theory being that free-flying seeds manage to germinate in places where they land without needing humans to tuck them in.

I have no idea whether it will grow or when it will grow or what it will grow into. The pot is small though. It won't be in the way. It can stay outside my door till next year if needs be. We shall see!

And another thing . . . nearly always, when you've taken a photograph of something, you find something else was also in the frame. Signs of other life. Often it's an insect. This time it was a slug trail. Slightly alter the brightness and contrast - and there it is. Slug-wos-on-the-path-overnight.

This post is the first in Loose and Leafy's response to the 30 Days Wild Challenge, organised by the Wild Life Trusts. The idea is to do something nature related every day in June. To join in or gain inspiration. click the badge.
30 DAYS WILD
Today's act of
random wildness
is to plant a
wild seed.

It will be fascinating to see what the seed grows into!

I suspect that many airborne seeds are in fact unsuccessful, Lucy, but we will all be waiting to see whether the winds of good fortune have delivered this one to a safe haven. Be sure to provide updates!

Hello Crafty Green Poet. Hopefully it will be fun - because hopefully it will grow. If it takes longer than a year to germinate I'll give up!

Hello David. Yes. Nature is very prodigal. Just as well not all seeds germinate or we wouldn't be able to move for vegetation!

Hello Mike. Not sure it's likely to grow into anything very interesting - but it will be interesting to see if it will grow!

Hello Karen. Yes. It could be from a substantial tree or a small plant. I don't know!
